BHRM Chapter 1: Knowledge and Situational Awareness for Rating
PART ONE for Rating and Cadet OOW
Situational Awareness (sa) is a concept fundamental to safety and efficiency, rooted in the "situation report." At its core, our ability to navigate any given scenario effectively depends on the interplay of three distinct pillars: rational knowledge, emotional intuition, and ingrained instinct.
1. Rational Knowledge (The Conscious Mind)
Rational knowledge is our conscious understanding of facts and procedures. It is the ability to identify the "correct" parameters under stable conditions—much like a student confidently solving a mathematical equation through knowledge alone. It is the foundation upon which all professional competency is built. Due to our short-term memory limitations, our conscious mind can only store a very limited capacity of items.
2. Emotional Intuition (The Subconscious Filter)
Intuition activates most strongly amid uncertainty, accessing tacit knowledge that analytical tools cannot capture. Our emotional state influences our prioritization at a subconscious level. When we feel a sense of unease or confusion, our brain is signaling a discrepancy between the situation and our expectations. This "gut feeling" often dictates how we prioritize tasks before we have even consciously identified the problem.
3. Habitual Instinct (The Unconscious Response)
Instinct manifests in two primary ways:
-
Habit: Executing established procedures (SOPs) fluidly without the need for active thought.
-
Reflex: Taking immediate action before rational awareness can even process the event.
-
Both operate at an unconscious level, and while they allow for a rapid response, their outcomes can be unpredictable if they are not properly conditioned through training.
