Chapter 12 Dynamic Navigation Competence
前言(Preface)

(Visual Lookout)

Preface
This chapter concludes the series. Over the preceding chapters, we have navigated through ten exercises, progressively exploring key concepts such as short-term memory (STM), skill development, working habits, situational awareness, graphical awareness, and ultimately, collision awareness. The depth and interrelation of these themes may have proven challenging—not only to readers, but even to myself as the author.
The rationale behind this approach came to me almost subconsciously, as often happens during two decades of writing and reflection. Short-term memory (STM) operates digitally, capturing precise values like speed, heading, and rudder angles—details we often strive to track and manage. While retaining every digital input may be impractical, what matters is knowing where and how to retrieve and verify this information when needed.
This process can feel immersive, almost like the digital cascade in The Matrix, or as Elon Musk mused—a reminder that humans, too, operate within coded structures of perception and response. Yet, in the relative world of maritime navigation, absolutes such as “fast” or “slow” lose meaning without context. We need not revert to endless digital comparisons; instead, graphical awareness offers a more intuitive and holistic solution. Thus, we treat STM as foundational to situational awareness—valuable not on its own, but for how it supports a broader, relational understanding through graphics.
The skill of graphical awareness rests on interpreting relative bearings during visual lookouts and analyzing speed vectors on radar. Is our speed appropriate? By comparing our vector’s length to others, we identify who is overspeeding and who poses a collision risk. Is our current course safe? The alignment—or misalignment—of the speed vector with collision points reveals the answer. During turns, we assess risk via collision lines and evaluate whether maneuvering time is sufficient. In narrow straits, we check if our vector runs parallel to separation zones or buoy lines. Advanced tools like the EBL (Electronic Bearing Line) and parallel indexing further aid in determining wheel-over points, counter-rudder timing, and even estimating arrival times at waypoints through vector intervals. Ultimately, a well-interpreted graphic provides clarity—provided one understands the principles and maintains disciplined working habits.
Finally, collision awareness represents the highest level of decision-making in complex navigation scenarios. Throughout these chapters, we’ve emphasized systematic evaluation of all nearby vessels and potential collision points. On the bridge, this assessment often occurs silently—whether by a seasoned captain or pilot—as time seldom allows lengthy consultation. Through repetition and refined habits, graphical awareness becomes internalized, guiding instinctive decisions rooted in deep-seated experience.
In this final chapter, we examine how misplaced instincts can lead to counterproductive habits in ship handling. By analyzing these errors, we highlight the practical value of the preceding exercises and illustrations, offering a chance to learn from mistakes and strengthen navigational judgment.
12 – 01 Collision Awareness Exercise – 11 Visual Lookout
12-01 The Time allocated to visual lookout is your proficiency with ARPA.

Figure 12-01 Ownship speed vector in 3 and 6 minutes at beginning
Initial State (Refer to Figure 12-01): The situational awareness is
1. Ownship begins with a 3-minute speed vector: course 065°(T), speed 21 knots.
2. The vector length is approximately 10.5 cables.
3. Three crossing vessels are observed on the starboard side, though their exact distances are unknown initially.
4. Extending the speed vectors to 6 minutes reveals a shared collision area involving all three crossing vessels.

Figure 12-02 Ownship speed vector in 3 and 6 minutes at one minute time
After 01minutes exercise time lapsed:
The situational awareness is
1. Ownship speed has decreased to 18.4 knots from 21 knots, following a reduction of engine revolutions to 16%.
2. Despite the telegraph setting, the actual reduction in propeller revolutions occurs slowly due to the vessel’s residual momentum from its initial speed.
3. Ownship’s course remains steady at 065°.
The Graphical Awareness is
- The first crossing vessel is projected to pass ownship’s bow in approximately three minutes (based on the 3-minute vector). (Observation)
- The positions and risks posed by the other two crossing vessels remain unclear using only the 3-minute vector. (Observation)
- After extending the vector to 6 minutes, it becomes evident that two crossing vessels on the starboard side will converge with ownship in nearly the same collision area within about 6 minutes. (Observation)
- Relying solely on speed reduction may be ineffective in this scenario, especially given the delayed response of the vessel’s propulsion system.
- In such cases, prioritizing a safe position (e.g., via course change) is more effective than relying only on safe speed. (Standard practice in high-density areas)
- So far, ownship has not taken any evasive action (e.g., course alteration) to mitigate the identified collision risks. (Observation)

Figure 12-03 Ownship’s 3-minute and 6-minute speed vectors at the 2-minute mark
After 02minutes exercise time lapsed:
The Situational Awareness is
1. Ownship speed has decreased to 16.4 knots from 18.4 knots, despite an increase in engine output to 48% at the 01 minute 30-second mark.
2. Ownship’s course has changed from 065° to 067.8° following a “Hard Starboard” rudder command initiated at 1 minute 30 seconds.
The Graphical Awareness is
- first crossing vessel will be about ownship bow after 3 minutes. (sighted)
- Two other crossing vessels are unknown with 3 minutes speed vector. (sighted)
The Collision Awareness after speed vector change to 6 minutes is:
- Ownship have collision risk with one starboard side crossing vessel (in pink circle) after 5 minutes. (sighted with 6 minutes speed vector)
- Another crossing vessel will pass ownship bow after 4 minutes in our heading now. (skill as below)
- By verifying collision point (red circle on speed vector) position, red line length is about one third of her three minutes speed vector. (By using finger span to compare is Good, have a divider beside ARPA is recommended)
- Ownship had a “Hard Starboard” rudder command right now.
- Alter course to starboard side need to be carefully controlled for second crossing vessel.
